High School Sports Update: UIL Championships Highlight the Week in Houston

This past week in Houston, several exciting happenings in high school sports took center stage as teams battled for state championships in the UIL Fall tournaments.

At the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio, the 6A Girls Water Polo Finals showcased two standout teams, Brazoswood and Foster. Brazoswood, holding a record of 26-2, faced off against Foster, who was undefeated at 30-0, after both teams secured their spots with impressive victories over Southlake Carroll (14-8) and Boerne-Champion (23-4), respectively. In a thrilling match that needed overtime to determine a winner, Brazoswood came out on top, winning 11-9. This victory marked the Buccaneers’ first state title, preventing Foster from celebrating a three-peat.

In recognition of outstanding individual performances, Brazoswood’s Mallory Kesler was named the State MVP. Joining her on the All-Tournament team were players from both schools, including Kinley Niles and Gigi Lower.

On the boys’ side, Clear Creek showed their dominance. Their journey began with a win over Foster (19-12), ensuring they moved on to the final against Marcus, who also had a strong showing. In a closely contested final match, Clear Creek managed to defeat Marcus, the 2023 champions, with a score of 14-10. Senior Jamie De Zwart was named State MVP for his remarkable contributions, with several athletes making it onto the All-Tournament team.

Meanwhile, over at the Baylor University Tennis Center, Class 4A finals saw Canyon Randall take the top spot, defeating Willis Point 10-4 and reclaiming their championship status. In the 5A classification, Frisco Centennial claimed victory against Abilene Wylie with a score of 10-2, marking their second consecutive title. The 6A final featured Round Rock Westwood facing Seven Lakes, with Westwood winning decisively at 10-3, their fifth championship in seven years.

In football, the weekend brought intense matchups, with North Shore narrowly escaping a thrilling contest against Atascocita, finishing 27-23. Despite the close loss, Atascocita remains a strong contender in the VYPE Class 6A Rankings. Other notable outcomes included a dominating performance by Katy over Paetow and Cypress Ranch edging out Cypress Woods, while Shadow Creek flexed against Pearland.

This week’s results reflect a vibrant competitive spirit within Houston’s high school athletes, marking a significant chapter in UIL history as they showcase their talent on a statewide stage.
