Aiken, S.C. – Newberry High School Football Celebrates Region Championship
Excitement was in the air on Friday night as the Newberry Bulldogs crowned themselves region champions for the first time since 2016! With a final record of 6 wins and 3 losses overall, and a perfect 4-0 record in region 4-AAA, the Bulldogs proudly celebrated this significant achievement after their 33-21 victory against the Silver Bluff team.
A Solid Finish to the Regular Season
The stage was set as Newberry took to the road, eager to secure both the region title and a win as they wrapped up the regular season. The game started off slow, with neither team managing to find the end zone in the first quarter. But things picked up in the second quarter! With the Bulldogs showcasing their strength, they scored a staggering 20 unanswered points. By halftime, Newberry was comfortably ahead at 20-7.
As the game unfolded, the Bulldogs continued their dominance on the field, maintaining a 27-7 lead at the end of the third quarter. Yet, as we all know in sports, anything can happen. Silver Bluff rallied in the fourth quarter, managing to score twice and bringing the game within reach at 27-21. The tension was palpable!
Keeping the Spirit High
But the resilient Bulldogs didn’t buckle under pressure. With determination and skill, they embarked on a long touchdown drive late in the final period, decisively putting the game out of reach. They capped off the evening with a final score of 33-21, sending their devoted fans into cheers.
Star Performers Shine Bright
Throughout the night, Kenton Caldwell stood out as a key figure. The talented QB threw three touchdown passes, showcasing his skills as a leader on the field. Bryce Satterwhite stepped up with two touchdown receptions, while Caleb Levy contributed one of his own. On the ground, Ty Abrams scored a rushing touchdown, adding to the excitement and showing just how well-rounded this Bulldogs team is.
A Strong Statement for the Future
Coach Cedrick Jeter reflected on the victory with pride, expressing happiness at how his team finished the season strong and secured the coveted region title. “We are in playoffs mode now,” he stated with enthusiasm. Although he noted that the weather conditions might have affected their offensive performance, Coach Jeter couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. “We didn’t play our best ball tonight, but we are still happy with the outcome.”
Looking Ahead: Playoffs!
With the regular season behind them and a four-game winning streak to boast about, the Bulldogs are ready to take on new challenges. Newberry will host Georgetown in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Mike Ware Field. The team has proven its worth this season, and anticipation is high as they head into the playoffs!
