Newberry Academy Eagles Wrap Up Historic Season
WINNSBORO, S.C. — The atmosphere was a blend of excitement and heartache as Newberry Academy Eagles concluded their football season on Friday, November 8th. The intensity of playoff football was palpable, but the scoreboard didn’t quite reflect the hope and spirit the Eagles brought to the field this year. Facing off against the formidable Richard Winn Academy Eagles, Newberry Academy fell 51-16 in the first round of the playoffs, a bittersweet ending to an otherwise remarkable season.
Breaking the 26-Year Drought
This season was especially significant for Newberry Academy as they broke a 26-year playoff drought. Their last playoff appearance was back in 1998, marking a long span of challenges and growth for the program. With a record of 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the region, the Eagles managed to make a strong comeback, winning the most games since the shortened 2020-21 season.
Despite the setback in the playoffs, the Eagles were able to showcase their determination and skill throughout the season. They previously faced Richard Winn in the second week of the regular season, where they faced a tough loss of 44-6. Unfortunately, the rematch didn’t offer a different fate, but it did underline the resilience and growth of the Newberry team.
A Season to Remember
The Eagles’ playoff appearance, though short-lived, was a testament to their hard work and dedication. Their dynamic backfield duo, Thomas McLean and Javon Conway, shone throughout the season, providing a spark of excitement for fans and teammates alike. Now, as the team looks forward to the next season, building on this experience will be key for their development.
Goodbyes and New Beginnings
However, graduation and transitions are just around the corner. The team will bid farewell to six key players, including standout talents like deep threat Emory Pye, starting quarterback Quinn Waites, and lineman Jody Ray Miles. Their contributions will be greatly missed, yet with returning talents like McLean and Conway, there’s a promising foundation for next season.
Looking Ahead
As the Eagles wrap up this memorable season, there’s a shared sense of pride and optimism in the air. The road ahead is filled with potential, and with the lessons learned from this year, the Eagles are poised for even greater achievements. Fans, parents, and the community are excited to see how the team will rise in the next season, with many looking forward to 2025!
Congratulations to the Newberry Academy Eagles on a fantastic season and best of luck in the future! Let’s keep our spirits high and support the team as they continue to strive for greatness!
