Fitchburg, Wisconsin Says Goodbye to Beloved Teacher Erin Michelle West
In a deeply moving ceremony, family, friends, and the community came together on Monday, December 23, 2024, at DOXA Church in Fitchburg to pay their respects to Erin Michelle West, a cherished substitute teacher tragically killed in a shooting at a Madison private school just a week prior. Erin, who was just 42, was remembered not only for her faith and kindness but also for her vibrant spirit that touched the lives of many.
A Community in Mourning
Hundreds of heartfelt supporters lined up outside the church in the chilly Wisconsin air, ready to honor the woman described as a “devout Christian with Southern roots.” The atmosphere was a blend of grief and celebration, with Christmas trees glowing in the background and a large photograph of Erin displayed prominently for all to see—reminding everyone of the light she brought into their lives.
Lead Pastor Rob Warren began the service, his voice trembling with emotion. “In a sense, no one wants to be here,” he shared, looking out at the sea of mourners. “But in another sense, we’re all supposed to be here right now, to hurt and heal together.” His words struck a chord as the community gathered to process their pain and remember the vibrant life Erin led.
Erin’s Legacy of Love
As the service unfolded, tributes poured in. Pastor Warren noted the numerous handwritten notes and underlined verses found in Erin’s personal Bible, illustrating her deep connection to her faith. One particular phrase stood out which read, “the Gospel is for everyone,” highlighting Erin’s mission to spread love and kindness. “This is what Erin West was about,” he said, reassuring everyone that Erin is now at peace. “She’s in heaven right now with Jesus and she’s more alive than she ever has been, and that’s the truth.”
Remembering Joyful Moments
Nate Kaloupek, a close friend and staff member at DOXA, couldn’t contain his tears as he spoke about Erin’s laughter, her love for family, and her quirky Southern charm. He shared how Erin and her husband, Jack, met in an online Christian chatroom and marvelously built a life filled with unforgettable moments. “She was really bad at hiding her emotions,” Kaloupek joked, “and her love for Chick-fil-A was unmatched!”
He also fondly recalled Erin’s plans to take her daughters to Disney World next spring, a dream that now feels bittersweet. “She’d want me to say ‘love y’all.’ Thank you,” he concluded, wiping away tears as the audience chuckled softly while also choked with emotion.
A Shock to the Community
Erin was fatally shot on December 16, 2024, in a tragic incident at Abundant Life Christian School, where a student opened fire with a handgun. The community is still grappling with the aftermath of that day, which also claimed the life of another young student, Rubi Vergara, and left six others injured. Investigators continue to delve into the motive behind this senseless act of violence that has rocked the community.
As the service drew to a close, attendees raised their hands in song, a powerful sign of unity and remembrance. With Erin’s casket resting at the altar and the soft hum of heartfelt melodies filling the air, the community came together to celebrate Erin’s life—a life filled with laughter, love, and an unwavering faith that now serves as a guiding light in these dark times.
Erin Michelle West’s passing is not just a loss to her family and friends; it is a loss to the entire community. However, her legacy of love, hope, and faith will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew her.
