The Midlands region is feeling the chill as a hefty snowstorm has swept through, creating some rather hazardous travel conditions. It’s no wonder that local schools are adjusting their schedules to keep everyone safe and sound. Let’s break down how each district is handling this frosty mess.
Calhoun County Public Schools
First up, we have Calhoun County Public Schools, which will be closing their doors on January 23. Parents can take a breather on this cold winter day as kids enjoy a snow day from their cozy homes!
Clarendon County School District
Meanwhile, Clarendon County School District isn’t letting the snow slow down their e-learning. Students will continue their studies online on January 23, but all school activities will be canceled, so keep those snowballs for another time.
Fairfield County School District
In the Fairfield County School District, it’s a closure as well. Students can expect a day off on January 23, which will not be an e-learning day. However, this missed day will need to be made up on May 26. So, pencils at the ready for that day!
Kershaw County School District
On the other hand, Kershaw County School District will keep things rolling with an e-learning day on January 23. Assignments will be available via Canvas or provided in good old-fashioned paper packets.
Lee County School District
Lee County also opts for e-learning on January 23. This means they’ll be hitting the books online, with all after-school programs and activities canceled for safety.
Lexington Districts
Moving to Lexington County, things are somewhat similar. Lexington One will continue e-learning on January 23 due to the unpredictable travel conditions. Lexington Two is also adopting e-learning on the same day, and all after-school activities will be canceled.
Lexington Four is taking a stronger stance with a full closure on January 23, along with district offices. On a brighter note, there’s an in-person makeup day scheduled for February 17.
School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties joins in the closure as well with a makeup day planned for March 17. Safety first!
Richland Ones and Twos
The weather doesn’t appear to be easing up anytime soon for Richland One schools. All schools and administrative offices will be closed on January 23, and there won’t be any e-learning. Meanwhile, the Richland School District Two will switch to an e-learning schedule on the same day.
Newberry, Orangeburg, and Saluda
Over in Newberry County, schools will face a two-hour delay on January 23, while Orangeburg schools and district offices are completely closed during this weather ordeal.
Saluda County Schools, on the other hand, will operate on a two-and-a-half-hour delay. Every little bit helps when navigating icy roads.
Colleges and Universities Adapt
Let’s not forget our higher education institutions! Columbia College will begin with a delayed start at 12:00 p.m., while Columbia International University will take a similar route, opening at noon.
As for Midlands Technical College, they’ll also open at 12:00 p.m., with classes kicking off at 12:45 p.m. Finally, South Carolina State University is gearing back up on January 23, with offices and in-person classes starting at 11 a.m. Morning classes, though, will be online.
