Local Heroes Sign with the Wolves

This year, Newberry College proudly signed five local athletes, showcasing their commitment to bringing in hometown talent. Among them were three stars from Newberry High School who are ready to join the Wolves family and contribute to the team’s future success:

  • Cole Hutchinson: A member of the 2024 graduation class, Hutchinson spent a year at Erskine College but is now geared up to make a fresh start after being red-shirted. His perseverance highlights his dedication to the game.
  • Jared Acosta: This impressive middle linebacker from the class of 2025 announced his commitment despite plans to serve a two-year mission first. Acosta’s résumé is nothing short of spectacular — he boasts three consecutive seasons with over 90 tackles, has been a three-time all-region selection, and earned all-state honors twice. Not to mention, he’s celebrated as the 2024 Region 4-AAA Defensive Player of the Year and the 2023 Newberry Observer Defensive Player of the Year. Talk about impressive!
  • CJ Earl: Also joining from the 2025 class, Earl has made headlines as a standout defensive back. He was recognized as the 2024 Newberry Observer Returner of the Year, solidifying his reputation as a dynamic player.

More Local Talents Join the Team

In addition to the Newberry trio, the program welcomed some bright up-and-coming stars from nearby schools:

  • Jaxson Moody from Mid-Carolina High School made waves as a defensive end during his senior season with an impressive total of 73 tackles, including four sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
  • Heyward Fellars, also from Mid-Carolina, is a promising talent set to graduate in spring 2025, further solidifying the Wolves’ future.

National Talent Adds to the Roster

The Wolves didn’t just stop at local talent. They also signed Andrew “Boom Boom” Bishop from Hewitt Trussville High School in Alabama. Standing at six-foot-three and weighing 210 pounds, Bishop is an impressive pass rusher who played a role in shaping his team’s top-ranked defense in the state!

Crowning Achievements and Future Plans

A huge congratulations is in order for all of these student-athletes as they commit to bringing their skills and determination to Newberry College football. As the Wolves gear up for an exciting season ahead, fans can mark their calendars for September 7, when they kick off against Valdosta State University under the lights at 7:00 PM.

This season opener will hold a special meaning as the Wolves honor U.S. Armed Forces service members by offering free admission for military personnel. To top it off, the team will debut their eye-catching military tribute uniforms, sure to create an unforgettable atmosphere!

Academic Excellence Recognized

Last but not least, Jackson Brentley Outlar from Dillon Christian School also signed a scholarship to play football for Newberry College. Outlar has not only excelled on the field but in the classroom too, boasting an outstanding GPA of 4.4976.
