Newberry College Women’s Basketball Team Falls to Anderson on Senior Night

In a thrilling evening filled with emotions, the Newberry College women’s basketball team faced off against Anderson University at Eleazer Arena for their much-anticipated Senior Night on February 27th. The atmosphere was electric with a packed student section, ready to support their favorite players one last time at home.

A Struggle in the First Quarter

Unfortunately, the night didn’t start well for Newberry. The team had a rocky first quarter, managing to shoot only 16% from the field, converting just 3 out of 19 attempts. By the time the first quarter ended, the scoreboard read 20-9 in favor of Anderson, leaving the Newberry fans holding their breath.

Second Quarter Sparks Hope

But the Newberry ladies found their rhythm in the second quarter. They clawed back, outscoring Anderson 19-12 and tightening their defense to hold their opponents to a mere 28% shooting percentage. As the halftime buzzer rang, the team headed to the locker room showing promising signs, trailing only 32-28 after a last-second half-court shot from Anderson just before the break.

Third Quarter Woes

Coming back after halftime, Newberry faced significant challenges once again. The team struggled offensively, managing to score only 5 points in the third quarter while Anderson’s strong performance pushed their lead to an impressive 52-33. By the end of the third quarter, Newberry found themselves behind by 19 points, and the game was starting to slip away.

Final Quarter Rally, But Not Enough

In the fourth quarter, Newberry showed some tenacity, managing to hold Anderson to 10 points and limiting them to a 33% shooting percentage. Sadly, even with their defensive effort, the team could not close the growing deficit, ultimately leading to a disappointing final score of 62-50, signaling the end of their home season.

Highlights from the Game

Despite the loss, there were bright spots for Newberry. Jess Thomkins put on a strong performance, achieving a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Caylin Moment made notable contributions from the bench, scoring 8 points along with 4 rebounds as well. The team’s effort did not go unnoticed, and head coach Johnette Walker expressed pride in the energy and determination displayed by her players throughout the game.

Looking Ahead

Though the season has been challenging with a record of 6-21 overall and 5-18 in the South Atlantic Conference, coach Walker recognized the vital role of the supportive crowd, encouraging fans to unite for next season to help elevate the team’s performance. Up next, Newberry is set to face Lenoir-Rhyne on March 1st at 2:00 p.m.. The ladies will take to the road for their final game of the season, seeking to end their season on a high note.

With one last chance to show their skills and determination on the court, the Newberry College women’s basketball team hopes to bring home a win and leave their fans cheering for more in the upcoming season.
