Newberry County Sheriff’s Office to Upgrade Equipment for Enhanced Community Safety
NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is making significant strides this summer in boosting safety and security within the community. In June 2024, the State Budget allocated $1 million specifically for upgrading technology at the Newberry County Detention Center, as well as for securing a new bulletproof, all-terrain vehicle.
Sheriff’s Vision for Improvements
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster highlighted the need for these upgrades, noting that the county, while small and rural, requires similar technology to that of larger counties like Richland and Lexington. “We need some of the same technology that Richland and Lexington has to protect our people and also, need some help in our jails,” he stated.
Addressing Recent Safety Concerns
Since the beginning of 2023, the Sheriff’s Office has faced a number of incidents involving armed suspects. Sheriff Foster expressed that these circumstances highlight the urgency of updating the department’s equipment to ensure their officers are well-equipped. He explained, “We didn’t have adequate cover for the officers that responded. We have our own tactical team that’s trained in handling situations like that, but we didn’t have the proper equipment to protect them.”
Enhancing Surveillance in the Detention Center
In addition to the new vehicle, another critical improvement is the update to the camera systems within the Newberry County Detention Center. The upgraded surveillance will serve as a second pair of eyes, promoting safety for both inmates and corrections staff. “It’s a difficult time in corrections; finding people to work and the things they have to deal with,” Foster noted. The new intuitive camera system will help ensure the security of everyone inside the facility.
Future Prospects for Equipment
According to Sheriff Foster, the newly acquired all-terrain vehicle is expected to be in service by the summer of 2025. Meanwhile, improvements to the detention center’s technology are anticipated to be completed sooner, as preparations are already underway to enhance the overall security environment.
