Newberry College to Introduce Public Health Major in Fall 2024
NEWBERRY — Starting this fall, Newberry College will roll out a new major in public health, marking a significant addition to its undergraduate offerings. This program aims to prepare students for careers dedicated to improving the health of communities, addressing various health challenges, and developing effective health policies.
What is Public Health?
The field of public health centers on the well-being of populations rather than individuals. It encompasses various tasks such as investigating health problems, assessing health hazards in communities, creating policies for better health, and educating the public on health issues. Additionally, public health professionals research the effectiveness of health interventions to find solutions that work best for communities.
Program Format and Curriculum
The upcoming public health major will be offered in a hybrid format. Core education courses will be conducted on-campus, while specialized courses will be available online. This structure allows students to learn from experienced professionals in the field while also benefiting from a hands-on learning environment on campus.
“The increasing needs for qualified health care professionals, especially in public health, make it essential that we prepare our students effectively,” said Dr. Jerry Alewine, dean of nursing & health sciences at Newberry College. “Our public health program is tailored to meet the demands of the industry while providing a flexible learning path that suits our students’ needs.”
Coursework and Career Opportunities
The curriculum will include a diverse set of topics essential to the field, including epidemiology, biostatistics, health services administration, environmental health, social and behavioral sciences, and health policy. By the end of their studies, graduates will be well-prepared for numerous careers in healthcare.
The job market for public health professionals is expanding rapidly. Graduates can find opportunities in hospitals, healthcare institutions, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and research facilities. In South Carolina, those with a bachelor’s degree in public health can expect to earn an average annual salary of approximately $69,627.
Expanded Health-Related Offerings
The introduction of the public health major adds to Newberry College’s various health-related programs. The college already offers majors in exercise science, health care management, health science, neuroscience, nursing, nutrition, RN-to-BSN, and a unique bachelor’s-level program in respiratory therapy.
