The memorial took place at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, drawing police officials, community members, and animal lovers who wanted to pay their respects to the courageous K-9 officer.

Incident Details

The unfortunate incident occurred on June 11, 2024, when law enforcement officials responded to a home on Gravel Road in Prosperity to serve a fugitive felony warrant. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the suspect hiding inside a family member’s home. When K-9 Officer Coba and his team confronted the suspect, the situation escalated quickly. Authorities reported that the suspect fired upon Coba, prompting law enforcement to return fire.

Despite their best efforts, K-9 Coba sustained serious injuries and was urgently transported to an emergency veterinarian. Tragically, he succumbed to his wounds, while the suspect was taken to a local trauma center for treatment. Several deputies at the scene sustained minor injuries, which required medical attention.

K-9 Officer Coba’s Legacy

Coba had been a valuable member of the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) since joining in 2021. He served on both the SLED SWAT Team and the K9 Tracking Team, playing an essential role in various operations that aimed to protect the community. His training and experience contributed significantly to the safety of law enforcement partners and local residents alike.

The loss of K-9 Coba has resonated throughout the community and gained attention beyond Newberry County. Governor Henry McMaster expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “Today, we tragically lost SLED K9 Agent Coba in the line of duty during the apprehension of an armed subject in Newberry County. We are grateful for our K9s, their handlers, and all our law enforcement officers who put their lives at risk each and every day.” His message highlighted the risks law enforcement officers face daily while fulfilling their duties.
