Newberry, S.C. Enhances Public Safety with Surveillance Camera System

In an effort to promote safety and security, the charming city of Newberry, South Carolina, is taking a big step forward by implementing a thorough surveillance camera system. With an impressive start, the local police department, led by Police Chief Kevin Goodman, has already installed 18 cameras, and seven more are in the works!

Community Feedback: A Breath of Fresh Air

Residents have started to notice the changes that come with these safety measures. Duke Jones, who lives close to one of the newly installed cameras on Wise Street, shared his thoughts: “It’s alright; it’s actually a lot more calm and quieter, so I guess it’s okay,” he said with a content smile. It’s clear that for many in the community, this initiative is already making a positive impact on their daily lives.

Why Surveillance Cameras?

So, what’s the driving force behind this initiative? The primary goal is simple: enhance public safety. Earlier this year, the city council earmarked $150,000 to acquire a total of 48 cameras. Chief Goodman elaborated, “The cameras are doing really well with helping us identify suspects and identified vehicles. It’s helped in intersections with wrecks that we’re having to work, so they’re proven to be really useful and are justifying their investment.”

Such statements highlight that these cameras aren’t just a shiny new toy for police; they’re vital tools already showing their worth. The first phase concentrated on areas known for higher crime rates and at points where citizens enter and exit the city.

Looking Ahead to Phase Two

Looking forward, the second phase of the program aims to delve deeper into the city’s interior, enhancing the safety measures even further. Chief Goodman stressed his confidence in the deterrent effect of these cameras, stating, “People that do bad things, right? Don’t want to be on camera. So, the more cameras we get up, hopefully, the fewer people will want to engage in illicit activities around town.”

It’s a refreshing perspective that resonates with many community members eager to feel more secure in their surroundings.

Expanding Technological Capabilities

But that’s not all! Alongside the surveillance cameras, the Newberry Police Department is broadening its technological capacities with the addition of a drone. That’s right—a drone! With two certified pilots on the team, this nifty gadget is already proving to be beneficial in several situations, including assisting with barricaded suspects, aiding in the search for runaways, and even locating elderly persons who might wander off. Chief Goodman expressed the drone’s utility, stating, “We’ve used it for barricaded suspects, runaways, elderly individuals who have wandered off, and for locating missing persons.” How cool is that?

Upcoming Plans

The second phase of the surveillance camera project is set to kick off early next year, and there’s a buzz of excitement in the air. The combination of advanced technology, community oversight, and a focus on safety lays a solid foundation for a brighter future for everyone in Newberry.

As the progress continues, one can’t help but feel optimistic about the increased safety and security these measures will bring to the beloved neighborhoods of Newberry, S.C. The city is evolving, and its commitment to looking out for its citizens shines through with this initiative.
