Newberry College Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month
NEWBERRY — Autumn in Newberry is about to get a whole lot more colorful and culturally rich as Newberry College partners with several local organizations to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. This vibrant celebration runs from September 15 to October 15, and it aims to spotlight the diverse traditions and significant contributions made by Hispanic Americans to both the campus and the broader community.
“Newberry College is proud to be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month to highlight the richness of the Hispanic cultures and their contributions to our campus and community,” shares Dr. Altheia Richardson, the vice president for diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging at the college. The enthusiasm for the month is palpable as she continues, “We have a wonderful team of students, staff, faculty and community members who have played a role in planning the lineup of activities and we look forward to welcoming our neighbors to campus for the community events.”
Exciting Events Scheduled
This year’s lineup features a variety of engaging events that promise to entertain, educate, and enrich the community. Throughout the month, Wessels Library will showcase a special display dedicated to Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting notable figures and achievements. Additionally, they will host a unique exhibition for the Day of the Dead from October 31 to November 2, allowing visitors to learn about this meaningful celebration honoring ancestors.
The celebration is made possible with the support of multiple sponsors, which include the college’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging, the Muller Center for Multicultural & Civic Engagement, the Office of Student Life, Newberry College Athletics, and several others. Community partners joining in the festivities encompass Metz Culinary Management, the City of Newberry, the Newberry Arts Center, and more.
A Rich History of Celebration
But what exactly is National Hispanic Heritage Month? The month-long celebration recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans, who trace their roots to countries such as Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and various nations across Central and South America. The observance began in 1968 when it first emerged as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was later expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
Interestingly, these 30 days encompass the independence days of seven Latin American countries, providing a significant historical context for the celebration. This month serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry that is woven by Hispanic heritage in the fabric of American history and culture.
