Silver Spring, MD – Local resident Craig Esherick was recently honored as one of nine inductees into the Hall of Fame at his high school alma mater, Springbrook High School. The celebration took place during a dinner ceremony held at Argyle Country Club on October 19. Esherick, a notable figure in boys basketball, is recognized for his impressive achievements while playing for the Blue Devils back in the 1970s.
Esherick, who graduated from Springbrook in 1974, reflected on his high school experience, stating, “I feel very lucky to have played for Springbrook and for good coaches along the way. It was so much fun, with great memories.” His contributions on the court were significant, as he was known for being a solid outside shooter, earning awards like all-county and all-state during his time at Springbrook. He also received recognition as all-Met by major local newspapers.
During his senior season, Esherick averaged an impressive 18 points per game and recorded a career-high of 38 points in a single game. His final game saw him scoring 26 points in a semifinal loss at the Maryland state tournament. Esherick played a vital role in helping the Blue Devils secure county championships and make it to the state tournament throughout his high school career.
Following his successful high school career, Esherick went on to play basketball at Georgetown University for four seasons, graduating in 1978. He later served as an assistant coach and eventually became the head coach for the Hoyas. His legacy in sports continued as he was also inducted into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
Esherick and his wife, former Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos, are proud parents of two sons, both of whom played basketball for Yorktown High School. This Hall of Fame recognition adds to Esherick’s remarkable contributions to the local sports community, highlighting the importance of roots and mentorship in athletics.
