This past Friday, on October 25, 2024, the town of Newberry came together to celebrate the life of a beloved community member, Bertha “Poochie” Neal, who passed away and was called home to glory. With a heartwarming legacy, Bertha’s remarkable story stretches back to her birth on January 5, 1932, to the late Jim and Janie Vance in Newberry, South Carolina.
Bertha was a cherished member of the St Mary AME church, where she found strong bonds of friendship and community support throughout her life. Her early years were spent cultivating the earth, as she worked on her family’s farm, which instilled in her a deep appreciation for hard work and dedication. As her life progressed, Bertha transitioned into an equally loving role in the kitchen, where she served as a cook at Haile’s Restaurant. It was said that her meals brought joy and comfort to all who tasted them, leaving a lasting impression on many families in the area.
Tragically, Bertha faced unimaginable heartache during her lifetime. She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Belle Williams and Gussie Coleman, and four brothers, James Vance, Fred Williams, Jesse Williams, and John Williams. Additionally, Bertha mourned the loss of 11 children, who are remembered with love and honor. Despite these overwhelming losses, Bertha’s spirit remained unyielded, and she unfolded strength from within that became her hallmark.
Today, Bertha is survived by an array of loving family members, including her children: Bettye Neal-Herbert of Newberry, Hayward (Brenda) Neal of Silverstreet, Elizabeth Neal-Traylor of Newberry, Tony Neal of Newberry, Daniel Neal of Newberry, Michelle Neal of Saluda, Phyllis Neal of Newberry, JoAnne Neal-Hudson of Columbia, Tyrone Neal of Hodges, Elbert Neal of Whitmire, and Stephanie Neal of Pomaria. Each of them carries a piece of her in their hearts, and they are determined to keep her memory alive.
Beyond her immediate family, Bertha’s legacy extends to a budding family tree with 29 grandchildren, an astounding 55 great-grandchildren, and an impressive 23 great-great-grandchildren. This multitude of descendants is a testament to Bertha’s nurturing spirit and enduring love. It’s clear that she was not just a mother but a guiding light for many.
Friends, family, and community members are warmly invited to join a Celebration of Life Service scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2024, at 12:00 PM. The service will take place at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel, where stories and memories will be shared, filling the space with laughter and tears alike. Following the service, Bertha will be laid to rest at Newberry Memorial Gardens, among the greenery that she loved so dearly.
In these moments of grief, it’s essential to offer support not just to ourselves but to one another. Many are seeking ways to cope with their grief, so resources like daily grief messages can serve as comforting reminders that they are not alone during this challenging journey.
As we navigate through this time of loss, let us remember Bertha “Poochie” Neal for the warmth she brought to our lives and the love she showered upon her family and friends. Her spirit will forever dance in the hearts of everyone she touched.
