At the Democratic National Convention 2024 in Chicago, outgoing President Joe Biden launched a fervent critique of his predecessor, Donald Trump, branding him a “loser” while passionately upholding his presidential tenure. Inciting an uproarious applause from the attendees, Biden’s announcement to bow out from the 2024 presidential race at the event was met with chants of solidarity for Biden’s services to the country.
“Donald Trump says we are losing, but he is the loser,” Biden emphatically declared, drawing a clear line between his administration’s achievements and the alleged shortcomings of the Trump tenure. Biden tackled Trump’s gloomy depiction of the United States, refuting repeated suggestions by Trump that the nation is in decline. He further questioned Trump’s perception of the world’s view of America as a leading nation.
Biden’s criticism didn’t end there; he particularly targeted Trump’s reported disdain for military personnel. “Who does he think he is?” Biden asked, referencing Trump’s alleged disregard and disrespect for soldiers serving their countries, labeling them as “suckers and losers”.
Biden went on to reproach Trump’s “America First” approach, which, according to Biden, has damaged the country’s international standing. He expressed confidence in his administration’s commitment to fortify relationships with Europe and take a stand against Russia’s rising supremacy. He justified this stance by citing the expansion of NATO through the addition of Finland and Sweden as testament to the effectiveness of his international policies.
While addressing the challenges and achievements of his administration, Biden, noticeably tearful, keenly emphasized the significance of the imminent electoral race in the backdrop of a progressive American democracy. He gave the center stage to Vice President Kamala Harris, extending a warm, grateful gesture for her unprecedented service to the nation.
Biden, alongside his family, shared an emotional recount of his reasons for contesting the 2020 elections, recalling the disturbing occurrences at the US Capitol Hill riots and Charlottesville and the divisive response from Trump, where he asserted that “there were very fine people on both sides”.
Biden was not shy in addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza, a subject of major worldwide contention. He shared the urgency to bring home hostages, end the war, and alleviate the suffering of civilians. His empathy extended to the protesters advocating for peace in war-torn regions.
