Newberry County, South Carolina, has people buzzing with excitement following an astonishing Bigfoot sighting reported earlier this month. Yes, you read that right! In a world where the line between myth and reality often blurs, a local hunter claimed to have actually spotted the elusive creature. Talk about an adventure!
On November 2, a hunter known only as “J.M.”, who also happens to be a police officer, found himself face to face with a creature standing a whopping 7 feet tall. With long brown hair and an ape-like face, this wasn’t your typical day in the woods. According to J.M., he was perched in his ground blind — a spot he’s been hunting since childhood — when he heard a loud grunt followed by a heavy stomp.
Can you imagine the tension? J.M. and this mysterious being stared at each other for what felt like an eternity—around 30 seconds, to be exact. J.M. described the creature as “amber-furred” and said it eventually turned and walked off into the woods. “As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I am convinced it was Bigfoot,” he said after the encounter.
The Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO), a group that has dedicated years to investigating sightings globally, took interest in J.M.’s report. Researcher Matthew Moneymaker reached out to J.M. and deemed his sighting credible. That’s quite the endorsement for our mysterious forest-dweller!
Interestingly, this exciting account marks the first “Class A” sighting reported to BFRO in South Carolina this year. The last significant sighting was back in February when a couple in Union County was allegedly harassed by a 9-foot-tall, black Bigfoot who seemed anything but friendly. Talk about a different experience!
Bigfoot is a legend that spans centuries, captivating folks across the globe. Stories of giant, furry creatures known as Sasquatch populate myths from various cultures, whether it’s the Yeti in the Himalayas or countless sightings in the dense forests of Washington state.
Here in South Carolina, there have been a total of 59 reported sightings since 1964. The seemingly intimidating creature might induce fear, but it also stirs up a sense of fascination, encouraging locals and tourists alike to seek out more encounters and share their own tales.
But Bigfoot isn’t the only cryptid claiming fame in South Carolina. The infamous Lizard Man has been known to stalk the community of Bishopville, causing quite a stir with its red eyes and scaly skin. And who could forget the Boo Hag, a creature from Gullah/Geechee folklore that’s said to drain the lifeforce from its victims like a vampire? There’s also the notorious Gray Man of Pawleys Island, who allegedly warns beachgoers of incoming storms.
The run-ins with Bigfoot and other mysterious beings have led to the popularity of annual events like the SC Bigfoot Festival held each fall in Oconee County. Not only do these festivals allow enthusiasts to share their stories, but they also offer local businesses an opportunity to thrive.
As the buzz around J.M.’s sighting continues, one can’t help but get caught up in the excitement of exploring the uncharted and mysterious realms of the Palmetto State. Whether you’re a die-hard believer or a cautious skeptic, the tales of Bigfoot and his cryptid counterparts add a bit of magic to the ordinary. So, grab your hiking boots and binoculars and keep your eyes peeled; who knows what lies hidden in our South Carolina forests!
