Blythewood, SC, is grieving the loss of a beloved member of the community, Travis Leonard Bianchi, who passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. He was 79 years old and leaves a legacy of history, activism, and a deep commitment to bettering his community.
Travis was born in Blythewood back in 1945 to Charles Americus Bianchi Sr. and Lena Marie (Eargle) Bianchi. Though he spent part of his childhood in nearby Newberry, Charlotte, and Hanahan, Blythewood remained his home. Travis graduated from Blythewood High School before pursuing his passion for history at Newberry College. He later earned a Master’s degree in history education from the University of South Carolina, where he honed his skills as an educator.
Travis made a significant impact as a teacher, engaging middle school students in social studies through captivating stories and his trademark collection of unique neckties. After teaching, he found a new path as an archeologist, a job that allowed him to dive deep into historical treasures, while also working as a zookeeper and at the United States Postal Service. His passion for history was evident in every role he took on.
In 1967, Travis married Patricia Shuford Bianchi, and together, they enjoyed a rich life filled with farming, pottery, and a love of nature. For 57 years, the couple shared their home with a number of dogs, forging a bond that was as strong as their commitment to the Earth. Travis had a heart for public service and believed firmly in activism as a means to uplift the community. He served on the Richland County Zoning Board and played a pivotal role in founding the Cedar Creek Citizens Community, aiming to promote balanced development while championing environmental responsibility.
As an ardent outdoorsman, Travis loved to hunt and fish, always balancing his enjoyment of nature with a strong stance for preserving it. He practiced organic gardening and self-sufficiency, embodying his belief in taking care of the planet.
Travis leaves behind his wife, Patsy; son Adam and daughter-in-law Jennifer; and grandson Atticus. He is also survived by his nephew Marion and numerous friends. Sadly, he was predeceased by his father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, all of whom he held dear.
The family has planned a private burial for Travis, with a public celebration of life set for later this spring. As the community reflects on his life, contributions, and the love he shared, many will remember him as a passionate advocate for history, community, and the environment. For anyone who wishes to honor Travis’s legacy, memorial contributions can be made to various organizations he supported.
Blythewood may have lost a remarkable historian and activist, but Travis’s spirit will surely resonate within the hearts of those he touched.
