Tragic Boat Capsizing Near Breezy Point Leaves Three Dead

A peaceful day on the water turned into a nightmare this past Sunday, February 24, 2025, when a recreational fishing trip off the coast of New York City ended in tragedy. A 30-foot vessel, known as the Grady White, sank approximately five miles southeast of Breezy Point, leading to a heartbreaking series of events that shook the local community.

The Fateful Trip

The day started off like any other for the six individuals aboard the boat. Setting off from Howard Beach, New York, they were looking forward to a day filled with fishing and fun. Unfortunately, trouble struck around noon when the boat began to take on water at an alarming rate. By 12:04 p.m., New York City 911 operators received an urgent call about the sinking vessel, prompting an immediate response from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Desperate Rescue Operation

The Coast Guard quickly mobilized to save the passengers. However, by the time help arrived, the situation had turned dire. Four of the five individuals rescued from the water were found unresponsive, highlighting the seriousness of the conditions they faced. Tragically, three of the individuals have now been confirmed dead, while two others who were hospitalized did not escape serious injuries — two are reported to be in critical condition and one is in stable condition.

The Search for the Missing

Among the passengers, a 52-year-old man named Vernon Glasford, hailing from the Bronx, remains missing. Search efforts continued tirelessly for about 30 hours, with the Coast Guard covering an extensive area of 842 square miles. This massive endeavor used helicopters, planes, ships, and small boats in hopes of locating Glasford. Sadly, as evening fell on Monday, the decision was made to suspend the search, leaving family and friends heartbroken.

The Environment Was No Friend

Witnesses on the day reported that the weather was far from pleasant, with severe winds adding a layer of challenge to an already dangerous situation. Water temperatures were chillingly low, hovering around 38 degrees Fahrenheit (about 3.3 degrees Celsius) — not ideal conditions for survival. As the investigation gets underway, the authorities are working hard to determine the cause of the incident. Boating accidents, while infrequent, can have devastating consequences, as demonstrated by this tragic occurrence.

A Community in Mourning

The response from the local Coast Guard has been one of profound sadness and condolences for the families affected by this accident. Captain Jonathan Andrechik expressed deep sorrow over the loss experienced by the victims’ families and the decision to halt search efforts for Glasford. The community is now left to grieve and reflect on the dangers that can lurk in seemingly serene waters.

Reflecting on Safety

This recent tragedy not only reminds us of the risks associated with recreational boating but also echoes a similar incident that occurred in July 2022 on the Hudson River, where a woman and a child lost their lives. Accidents like these can serve as a reminder of the importance of boating safety measures and staying aware of weather conditions. As investigations continue, prayers and thoughts are with the families who are navigating this unimaginable loss.
