Hey there, Clinton community! Get ready for an engaging evening as the sun sets and brings delightful temperatures with it. With a high of 84°F for the day and a comfortable low of 58°F overnight, today promises to be a lovely day to partake in some intellectual and community-driven discussions. The light and variable winds add a nice touch—perfect for gathering with friends and family!
Tonight at 7 p.m., the esteemed Presbyterian College alumnus Steve Smith will grace the podium as the featured speaker for the 2024-25 Robert M. Vance Lecture on Business Ethics. This event will take place in the charming Edmunds Hall. Smith, who is not only a cherished member of the PC Board of Trustees, but also the president of Swagelok North Carolina/East Tennessee, has a rich history with the college and is excited to share his insights with the next generation of business leaders.
For those unfamiliar with him, Smith is a proud graduate of Presbyterian College, holding a bachelor’s degree in business administration since graduating in 1984. His passion for PC is palpable—he was a four-year letterman and captain of the Men’s Basketball team! Beyond his athletic accolades, he’s consistently demonstrated his loyalty to the college that helped shape him.
Throughout his career, Smith has maintained strong ties with his alma mater, serving not only as a college trustee but also as a board member of the PC Alumni Association. Together with his wife Gayla, he’s actively engaged in philanthropic efforts. They’ve provided substantial support towards initiatives like the Championship Spirit campaign, commemorating former head basketball coach Gregg Nibert by dedicating the gymnasium floor in his honor. Additionally, they established the Gayla M. and Steven M. Smith Scholarship Fund, aimed at aiding students who participate in the basketball program.
Residing in Waxhaw, N.C., the Smith family isn’t just about business; they’re deeply involved in their community. Whether through charity work or participating in services at the Weddington United Methodist Church, they make it a priority to give back. They have two lovely children: Ashton, who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010, and Marshall, a 2013 PC graduate, who is married to Lauren Lefeber Smith, also a graduate of the class of 2013.
In the words of Dr. Anita Gustafson, president of Presbyterian College, “Steve Smith is a True Blue role model of devotion and loyalty to his alma mater and a consummate professional.” She emphasizes the essence of ethical conduct in business, noting that “in every role he plays – as an alumnus, trustee, family man, and business leader – Steve exemplifies PC’s values of service, honor, and trust.”
The Robert M. Vance Lecture Series on Business Ethics, which is generously supported by the Bailey Foundation, stands as a heartfelt tribute to Robert M. Vance, a former PC trustee and prominent Clinton businessman. This series not only pays homage to Vance’s values of ethics, integrity, and honesty, but also opens the floor for business leaders to discuss how to balance profitability with principles. After all, it’s crucial for future business leaders to understand the responsibilities they shoulder.
This evening should definitely not be missed, especially for those interested in the intersection of business and ethics. Previous speakers have included an impressive lineup of influential leaders, ensuring the attendees glean invaluable insights whatever the position they might hold in the future.
So get your thinking caps on and be part of an enriching conversation on business ethics tonight! Let’s gather in Edmunds Hall to welcome Steve Smith and soak in the wisdom he has to offer. Cheers to a fantastic evening of learning in our wonderful community!
