In the early hours of Thursday, August 29, a devastating car accident on Interstate 26 near Chapin left a Newberry mother and her young son dead. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that 47-year-old LaRhonda Davis Gibson and her 23-month-old son Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr. lost their lives in the accident, which occurred around 2:45 a.m..
According to the report from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the pair was traveling in a sedan when their vehicle was struck from behind. Gibson’s car, which was in the process of slowing down due to oncoming traffic, was sadly hit by a pickup truck. The impact resulted in her vehicle colliding with the back of a tractor-trailer.
The accident took place near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Peak Street, causing significant delays on the interstate for commuters heading west. Emergency services were quick to respond, but unfortunately, LaRhonda and Ketron were both pronounced dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Two passengers in the pickup truck that caused the crash sustained various injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed yet.
