Chapin, S.C. – A tragic car accident early Thursday morning has left a mother and her toddler dead on Interstate 26. The incident involved a sedan and a tractor-trailer, sparking significant traffic disruptions in the area.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash took place around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Peak Street in Chapin. A sedan, driven by 47-year-old LaRhonda Davis Gibson of Newberry, was struck from behind by a pick-up truck while both vehicles were slowing down for oncoming traffic. The impact was severe, causing Gibson’s car to crash into the rear of a tractor-trailer.
Both LaRhonda and her 23-month-old son, Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr., were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. The loss of life has left a deep sorrow within the local community.
Two occupants of the pick-up truck were injured in the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
