CHAPIN, S.C. – A devastating car crash on Interstate 26 in Lexington County has resulted in the loss of a mother and her young son early Thursday morning. This tragic incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. and has left the local community in shock.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that 47-year-old LaRhonda Davis Gibson and her 23-month-old son, Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr., both residents of Newberry, were in their sedan when they were struck from behind by a pick-up truck. According to the authorities, the accident happened when Gibson’s sedan, along with a tractor-trailer, slowed for oncoming traffic.
The force of the collision caused Gibson’s vehicle to crash into the back of the tractor-trailer, ultimately leading to a catastrophic outcome. Both LaRhonda and Ketron were declared dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Emergency responders attended to the two individuals in the pick-up truck, who were subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. The crash not only claimed two lives but also caused significant traffic disruptions on I-26, particularly near the intersections of Columbia Avenue and Peak Street.
Motorists experienced substantial delays, with congestion reported extending to the nearby Bush River Road and Leaphart Road areas due to the early morning accident.
