Clinton Middle and High Schools achieved remarkable success at the state-level Science Olympiad, earning top spots and securing their places at the National competition. Held at Presbyterian College, both teams showcased exceptional talent and teamwork, with Clinton Middle School winning first in 14 events and Clinton High School taking first in 10. The community’s support and enthusiasm played a crucial role as they rallied behind these talented students, who are set to represent South Carolina at the National Science Olympiad in Lincoln, Nebraska, in May 2025.
Clinton, a charming community where science meets excitement, recently buzzed with energy as Team Clinton, comprised of Clinton Middle School and Clinton High School students, took center stage at the state-level competition of the Science Olympiad. The event unfolded at Presbyterian College, where bright young minds showcased their talents and determination to conquer the science world.
Last Saturday was not just any day; it was a day of triumph for the local teams. The atmosphere was electric as participants went head-to-head in a variety of challenges, all geared towards testing their scientific knowledge and skills. The proud moment came when State Director Patrick Nelson presented an Honorary Gold Medal to President Dr. Anita Gustafson, recognizing the host school’s contributions to the event. While the focus was on competition, there was a remarkable spirit of camaraderie and teamwork throughout the day.
As Clinton continues its mission to become “Science City, S.C.,” the support from the community plays a significant role. District 56 Superintendent Dr. David O’Shields took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of community backing in fostering a culture of scientific exploration and excellence. Clearly, the residents of Clinton believe in investing in their future through education.
The competition featured 23 different areas where students demonstrated their skills, leading to some exciting results. In the Division B category, Clinton Middle School clinched the top spot with an impressive 35 points, followed by Banks Trail Middle School at 67 points and GREEN Charter Middle School at 71 points. Remarkably, Clinton Middle School excelled by winning first place in 14 of the events available.
Meanwhile, in Division C, the spotlight was also on Clinton High School, which bagged first place with 57 points. Hot on their heels were Spring Hill High School with 118 points, and Academic Magnet High School close behind with 128 points. Clinton High School’s accomplishment was highlighted by their success in winning first place in 10 events, showcasing their hard work and dedication.
Following their stellar performances, both Clinton Middle and High Schools have earned the prestigious opportunity to represent South Carolina at the National Science Olympiad in Lincoln, Nebraska, in May 2025. This is a major milestone for the teams, who have a history of excellence in the competition, winning state titles a remarkable 22 times over the past 38 years. Clinton High School alone boasts 13 state championships, a testament to their ongoing commitment to science education.
It’s worth noting that participation in the Science Olympiad is on the rise, with a 29% increase in membership from the previous year. The Science Olympiad, which began in 1983, engages over 13,500 schools across all 50 states, fostering a love for science and a spirit of competition among students.
The event, which was transitioned this year from its previous locations at The Citadel and Newberry College, utilized seven various venues at Presbyterian College to accommodate the growing interest. In a generous gesture, the Learns County Water & Sewer Commission provided valuable support by donating $1,000 and 24 cases of water for the participants and volunteers.
As Team Clinton looks forward to the National Science Olympiad, there’s a palpable excitement in the air. The community is rallying behind these bright young minds, ready to cheer on their journey. With such a wealth of talent and passion for science, the future holds great promise for these students and the city of Clinton!
