Welcome, folks, to the wild and wacky world of the college football playoffs! Things are heating up as we dive into Week 14, and the playoff picture is shaping up—kind of like that jigsaw puzzle you’re always meaning to finish but can never find all the pieces for.
This week had its fair share of surprises, especially with No. 2 Ohio State falling to Michigan in a nail-biter that ended 13-10. The Buckeyes went into that game as 19.5-point favorites, but let’s just say they went home disappointed. To add to the drama, No. 6 Miami couldn’t hang onto a massive 21-point lead against Syracuse, resulting in their second loss in just three weeks. What a rollercoaster!
On a brighter note, at least eight teams are feeling pretty good about their playoff aspirations as we head into conference championship weekend. But keep an eye out! Those four remaining spots could be snatched up by any team that wins their conference title games.
Here’s how we view the playoff contenders after this thrilling regular season:
Starting with the unbeatable Oregon Ducks, they’re the only team that’s gone through the entire season without tasting defeat. Even if they lose spectacularly in the Big Ten title game against Penn State, they’re likely still in the playoffs. Talk about pressure-free!
Then there’s Penn State, who clinched their conference championship spot, thanks again to that stunning Ohio State loss. Speaking of the Buckeyes, despite their disappointing record of 10-2, they’re still in the hunt for that coveted playoff position. It’s hard to imagine them dropping below No. 8 after what went down on Saturday.
Notre Dame wrapped things up nicely with a win over USC, bringing their record to 11-1. And guess what? Their playoff hopes are looking very strong. Meanwhile, Indiana also boasts an 11-1 record after taking down Purdue. We think Indiana has a decent shot because, with all the chaos in college football lately, it would be surprising if the committee left them out.
Then, there’s Miami, who is now the biggest wildcard in this playoff race. Their loss to Syracuse put a damper on things, and they’ll be glued to their TVs watching the ACC title game, hoping for some good news. If SMU manages to beat Clemson, Miami could potentially sneak in, and that’s if they’re lucky!
Other notable contenders include Texas who managed to scrape through a messy win against Texas A&M and will play in the SEC title game against Georgia. Even a loss won’t kick them out of the playoff conversation.
And while folks up north are prepping for the playoffs, down south there’s a different story. With teams like Georgia and the trio of three-loss teams from the SEC—Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina—playing their final cards, it’s hard to imagine them moving through.
This week wasn’t just about the playoff race; several teams had notable wins and losses:
As we dive into this next thrilling chapter, keep your eyes peeled for anything that can shake up this already wild playoff landscape. With so many teams still vying for a spot, it’s sure to be an exciting ride leading into the conference championships. Buckle up, folks!
