This week has been a tough one for the community of Columbia as we prepare to say goodbye to two beloved lives lost too soon. LaRhonda Gibson, a vibrant 47-year-old, and her one-year-old son, Ketron Gibson, Jr., tragically lost their lives in a horrific car accident that has left many heartbroken.
The wake for LaRhonda and little Ketron is set for Friday, September 6. Friends, family, and community members are invited to gather for what promises to be a beautiful celebration of life at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia. The service will begin at 11 a.m., and it’s expected to draw a large crowd as we come together to honor their memories and support one another during this difficult time.
The accident happened early last week, just after 2:45 AM on I-26 West, near mile marker 90. According to authorities with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, LaRhonda and Ketron were inside a Nissan sedan when tragedy struck. They had slowed down along with a tractor-trailer in front of them due to traffic conditions. Unfortunately, their vehicle was rear-ended by a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which pushed their Nissan into the back of the tractor-trailer.
This devastating incident has raised many questions about road safety and the importance of driving attentively, especially during late-night hours. The collision serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of cherishing moments with our loved ones.
The loss of LaRhonda and Ketron has sent shockwaves throughout Newberry, where they lived. Friends and family describe LaRhonda as a loving mother, full of energy and passion for life. Little Ketron, just a toddler, was known to bring smiles to everyone around him. Their absence is felt profoundly by all who knew them.
In the wake of the tragedy, many are stepping up to lend a hand—whether it’s through sharing memories, offering support to the family, or helping with arrangements. It’s heartwarming to see how a community can come together in times of grief and show such spirit of solidarity.
As we prepare to gather in remembrance, it’s essential for everyone to reflect on the loved ones in our lives. This event not only serves as a chance to honor LaRhonda and Ketron but also invites all of us to check in on one another and prioritize safety whenever we step behind the wheel.
So, if you can, consider attending the service on Friday. Bring along some fond memories, maybe a photograph to share if you have one, and let’s create a space filled with love and remembrance. LaRhonda and little Ketron deserve to be celebrated, and together, we can ensure their legacy lives on in our hearts.
In moments like these, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing those we hold dear. Let us all keep LaRhonda and Ketron’s family in our thoughts, sending love and strength their way as they navigate this painful journey. May their souls rest in peace, and may we all strive to live our lives with as much joy and love as they did. Remember to drive safe and to hold your loved ones just a little closer each day.
