Newberry, South Carolina – The community of Newberry is coming together to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, Mrs. Helen B. Hester, who passed away on May 6, 2024, at St. Mary Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut. Born on September 11, 1930, Helen’s journey was one full of love, adventure, and deep-rooted connections that left a lasting impact on everyone around her.
Helen was not just a resident of Newberry County; she was a cherished member of her community. After joining Bethlehem Baptist Church at an early age, she remained a devoted member throughout her life. Her adventurous spirit took her far and wide, with residences in places like California, Alaska, and Connecticut, but Newberry was always dear to her heart.
During her time in Waterbury, Connecticut, Helen became well-known for her dedication while working at Timex in Watertown. After moving back to South Carolina, she continued to exemplify hard work at Kaiser Roth Hosiery Plant before retiring from Whitten Center in Clinton, SC. Her career was a testament to her strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to her responsibilities.
Above all, Helen was affectionately known as “Granny” to many. Her role as a mother to her children, Tata and Foy, and her cherished status as a grandmother was the joy of her life. She often expressed her love for her family, which extended generously to her grandchildren, who fondly remember her unconditional love. From sweet moments shared to teaching life lessons, the legacy of love that Helen left behind is immeasurable.
Music brought great joy to Helen’s life. A self-proclaimed fan of Tina Turner, she also embraced the modern sounds of artists like Bruno Mars, often praising his energetic performances. Sports, especially basketball and football, were also close to her heart. Helen had a considerable following of the Dallas Cowboys and was an avid fan of golf, admiring the skills of Tiger Woods.
Helen’s love extended beyond her family; she also had a special place in her heart for her dogs – Missy, Rosie, Mister, and Scooter, who provided her companionship and joy. Her pet pals were a constant source of happiness in her life, creating a wonderful home atmosphere.
Sadly, Helen was predeceased by several loved ones, including her mother, Blanch J. Sanders, her husband, Elmer Hester, her brother Benjamin Bouknight, and her dear friend and sister, Francis Vaccarelli. However, she leaves behind a rich tapestry of cherished relationships with her daughter, Eleanor Dennis, her son, Foy Watts, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
