Community Mourns the Loss of Leroy Douglas Cook Jr., Beloved Family Man and Friend
Newberry, SC – The warm community of Newberry is coming together in heartfelt remembrance of Leroy Douglas Cook Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as “Tiger”. His passing on October 5, 2024, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, marks the end of a cherished life that touched so many.
A Life Filled with Love and Service
Born on August 8, 1965, to the late Leroy Douglas Cook Sr. and Amye Helen Sims Cook, Tiger grew up in Newberry County where he built a legacy of love and community spirit. He was a proud graduate of Newberry High School, class of 1984, where his passion for the Bulldogs made him a familiar face in the stands at sporting events.
After high school, Tiger embarked on a diverse career, beginning at Sandlapper Car Dealership, working alongside his late uncle, Freddie Cook. He later honed his skills and contributed to several local businesses, including Shakespeare, Amick Farms, Kiswire, Newberry County Cleaners, and Renfro. Wherever he worked, he was known for his hardworking nature and genuine kindness.
A True Sports Enthusiast
Those who knew Tiger can recall his unwavering support for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the Washington Commanders. His spirited enthusiasm for sports brought joy not just to his life but to those around him, making game days lively and exciting.
Loving Family Man
Despite his many passions, it was Tiger’s family that truly filled his heart. He is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Princess T. Penny of Newberry and An’Nisha S. Boyd of Greenville. He also leaves behind a sister, Jacqueline Dominick, and a host of siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who cherished him deeply.
His family tree flourished with numerous cherished relatives, including a devoted step-sister, two brothers, and a step-brother, along with many aunts, uncles, and great-nieces and nephews. Each member held a unique place in his heart, contributing to the love and support system that was essential to him throughout his life.
Funeral Services to Celebrate His Life
The community is invited to join in celebrating Tiger’s life on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Pleasant Grove AME Church. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at the church cemetery, where friends and family can honor his memory.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, October 11, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel, allowing everyone a chance to pay their respects and say goodbye to a man who made a lasting impact on those around him.
