NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — In a disturbing turn of events, two daycare workers have found themselves in serious trouble after allegations surfaced accusing them of allowing children to physically harm their peers at Kids Unlimited of Prosperity. This unsettling incident reportedly took place on October 23, 2023, and has left local parents shaking their heads in disbelief.
According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), the troubles began when the owner and supervisor of the daycare received a report about a shocking incident involving the young children in their care. It appears that two children were moved from one classroom to another, not for educational purposes, but so they could *beat up another juvenile*!
Evidence collected, including surveillance video from within the daycare, allegedly shows that at least two children were hit or slapped on the head and face during this troubling scenario. What’s even more astonishing is that one of the daycare workers reportedly filmed the incident using her phone. This video footage has now been handed over to the authorities, shedding light on the chaos that unfolded.
The situation escalated quickly. Following the incident, daycare workers Ericka Sherai Jones, 27, and Serena Caldwell, 56, chose to turn themselves in to the Newberry County Detention Center on October 24. The two women now face serious charges: Jones has been slapped with 14 counts of *Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor* and 14 counts of *Unlawful Conduct Toward a Child*, while Caldwell faces 15 counts of each of those charges.
In total, the investigation revealed that 14 young children were involved in this alarming episode, with ages ranging from just *3 to 4 years old*. This raises a profound concern regarding the safety and well-being of such tender-hearted kids, who looked to these adults for care and protection. Instead, they were subjected to a violent situation orchestrated by those they were meant to trust.
As a direct consequence of these shocking allegations, both Jones and Caldwell have been fired from their positions at Kids Unlimited of Prosperity. They were handed verbal notices of termination and issued *no trespass* orders, ensuring they cannot return to the premises.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly negative, with many parents expressing their outrage and concern. The idea that such a situation could take place at a daycare is both alarming and devastating. Families entrust daycare centers to care for their children and provide a safe learning environment. Now, parents are faced with questions and fears they shouldn’t have to consider.
As investigations continue, local authorities are reminding parents to remain vigilant regarding their children’s safety in daycare settings. It’s important to have open and honest conversations with kids about what’s happening in their environments, to ensure they feel safe and supported at all times.
This unfortunate incident in Newberry County serves as a wake-up call to all who need to prioritize the safety of our youngest community members. We hope those responsible are held accountable and that the children involved receive the necessary support and care to heal from this traumatic experience.
