DE PERE – The Denmark girls’ golf team took home the team title in a nail-biting finish, besting Freedom by just two shots. Denmark scored 406 points, edging Freedom’s 408. Winneconne also performed well, finishing with 413 points and securing a spot in the sectional meet.
Individually, Kay Lee McClintock from Freedom shined, earning medalist honors with a round of 91. Whitney Derricks led the Denmark team with a score of 99. Other individual qualifiers for the upcoming sectional include Caroline Vanden Heuvel of Xavier, Callaway Goodman of Kiel, and Amelia Eiting of Little Chute, all of whom will also head to the competition.
The sectional meet is scheduled for October 8 at Crystal Springs in Seymour, where the top players will aim for a shot at the state tournament. The team standings from the tournament were: Denmark 406, Freedom 408, Winneconne 413, Little Chute 419, Wrightstown 426, Xavier 435, and Kiel 444.
In other sports news, Neenah dominated the Fox Valley Association (FVA) tournament, picking up six of seven flight wins and finishing the tournament with 62 points. Kimberly followed with 54 points. Julia Gurholt from Kimberly continued to impress, winning the No. 1 singles title for the third consecutive year and completing the season with a remarkable 144-1 record against FVA opponents.
As for volleyball, Appleton North battled Fond du Lac in a thrilling match. After going back-and-forth, Appleton North ultimately triumphed 22-25, 25-18, 29-31, 25-9, 15-12. Coach Steve Scheuerell praised his players for their grit and noted the progress the team is making.
This weekend’s events set up an exciting finish to the fall sports season, with teams gearing up for sectionals, playoffs, and the concluding matches.
