Columbia: A Celebration of Dr. Jerome Singleton’s Inspiring Journey

Columbia has become a shining example of how determination, community support, and education can lead to incredible success. A local hero in the world of education and athletics, Dr. Jerome Singleton, reflects on his transformative journey from a young athlete to a respected educational leader. As a proud alumnus of Newberry College, where he played football, and now a trusted member of its Board of Trustees, Dr. Singleton has dedicated his life to empowering future generations.

A Storied Career in Education

Dr. Singleton’s impressive journey really kicked off when he was appointed the Executive Director and Commissioner of the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) in 2005. With nearly three decades of experience in the realm of high school athletics, he embraces his role as a leader with significant pride. Serving on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Board of Directors from 2014 to 2018, Dr. Singleton is recognized as the most senior Commissioner/Executive Director in the NFHS.

Trailblazer for Diversity

Dr. Singleton made history as the first African American Commissioner to serve as President of the NFHS Board of Directors from July 2017 to June 2018. This monumental achievement highlights the importance of inclusivity in education and athletics. His appointment has added to the conversation around diversity and representation, encouraging young athletes from various backgrounds to pursue their dreams.

From Aspiring Student to Educational Leader

Dr. Singleton’s own journey into education began during his time at Newberry College. Although he didn’t initially consider the school—larger institutions were on his radar—an invitation from a close friend opened a new chapter in his life. His first visit to Newberry introduced him to a warm and welcoming atmosphere that eventually persuaded him to enroll.

Certainly, adjusting to campus life was not without its challenges. Coming from the predominantly black community of rural Charleston County, he experienced a bit of culture shock in a predominantly white college. But what began as an initial discomfort evolved into a deep appreciation for the increasing diversity at Newberry College over the years. He often credits his small-town roots for nurturing his dreams rather than suppressing them.

Lessons Learned Through Sports

Playing football for Newberry College, where he was a three-year letter winner, Dr. Singleton learned valuable life lessons beyond the field. Teamwork, discipline, and consistency became cornerstones of his philosophy, guiding him as he transitioned from athlete to educator. Influenced by teammates who pursued teaching, Dr. Singleton found his passion for coaching while working as a physical education teacher at Greenwood High School. His earlier dream of working in textiles faded as he discovered his true calling in the classroom.

Embracing Leadership and Giving Back

Following a few years as a teacher, Dr. Singleton earned a master’s degree in school administration, which opened doors to becoming a school administrator. Starting as an assistant principal at a middle school, he then transitioned back to coaching before returning to administration at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC. After gaining valuable experience, he applied for the SCHSL position, marking a significant milestone in his career.

A Voice for Student-Athletes

With his extensive history in education spanning nearly thirty years, Dr. Singleton carries with him an immense sense of obligation. He passionately advocates for creating rewarding experiences for all student-athletes involved in education-based athletics. His commitment to inclusivity and community engagement shapes the future of high school sports in South Carolina.

Reflecting on his time at Newberry College, Dr. Singleton expresses excitement and gratitude for the transformative experiences and friendships forged during those years. His journey is a testament to the impact of education, community support, and a passion for helping others. In a world filled with challenges, it’s stories like his that remind us of the possibilities that lie ahead with dedication and perseverance.
