NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — What started off as a typical Sunday morning turned into chaos for residents in Newberry County when a shooting occurred in the early hours, leaving three people hospitalized. The sound of gunfire echoed through the streets around 2:40 a.m., prompting the Newberry County 911 center to receive numerous calls from concerned citizens. It didn’t take long for local law enforcement to jump into action.
Upon arrival at the scene on Brown Chapel Circle, deputies discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower torso. The situation escalated when authorities learned that a third person had already been taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle. This third victim reportedly had multiple gunshot wounds, intensifying the urgency in the sheriff’s office response.
The quick thinking of the deputies was evident as one officer applied a tourniquet to the victim’s injury, showcasing the importance of swift medical assistance in critical situations. Newberry County Emergency Medical Services worked diligently to transport the victims, with one being airlifted from the hospital due to the severity of their condition. Another victim was taken by ambulance, ensuring they all received the care they desperately needed.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster has indicated that the situation may have arisen from a gathering, although specific details remain unclear. “It appears that there was some kind of gathering there, and we don’t know whether there was a party or if it looks like maybe an illegal business was being run at that location,” he mentioned during his briefing. He further elaborated that a confrontation occurred between two groups, and unfortunately, firearms were introduced into the mix.
The mood in the community is understandably tense. Residents are shaken, fearing for their safety amid increasing violence. The sheriff’s department has reported that those present at the scene are not cooperating with the investigation, leaving authorities scrambling for answers. In light of this, they are urging anyone who may have information regarding the shooting to come forward and call 803-321-2222.
As the investigation unfolds, the sheriff’s office is focused on gathering further details and clarifying the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The lack of cooperation from witnesses raises concerns about community trust and the importance of communication in preventing such occurrences in the future.
These types of violent incidents can create a ripple effect throughout the community, impacting local businesses, schools, and neighborhoods. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and look out for one another during this tough time. While the investigation continues, the authorities ask everyone to remain vigilant and supportive of each other.
As more details emerge regarding the motive behind the shooting and the conditions of the victims, the community holds its breath. The shooting raises broader concerns about safety and conflict resolution that are necessary to address in order to foster a harmonious living environment. For now, the focus remains on healing for the victims and settling the fears within the community.
