Erie, Pennsylvania – The start of the 2024-25 winter sports season was set to kick off last Friday, as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) permitted teams to begin play. However, winter weather had other plans for the athletes and fans in Northwestern Pennsylvania. As snow began falling Friday night, Erie County found itself nearly at a standstill, prompting the cancellation and postponement of several sporting events.
The National Weather Service has predicted an additional eight to fifteen inches of snow through Tuesday night, maintaining a snow warning for the area. This has led to the adjustment of many scheduled high school sports events across the region.
Among the affected events, notable postponements in girls basketball include:
- North East at General McLane
- Frewsburg (New York) at Cathedral Prep
- Kennedy Catholic at Cardinal O’Hara (Tonawanda, New York)
In the boys basketball division, the following match-ups have also been impacted:
- North East at Meadville, which has been rescheduled for December 21 at North East
- Erie at General McLane
- Warren at Mercyhurst Prep
Additionally, the Metro League’s girls bowling season has been delayed, with the start now pushed to December 11. Weekly matches will take place every Wednesday through February 19, with potential playoffs scheduled for February 26, located at Eastland Bowl, 3729 McClelland Ave.
As winter continues to make its presence felt, teams and fans are encouraged to keep an eye on updates for any further changes to scheduled games. For inquiries related to the bowling season, individuals can reach out to Mike Copper via email.
Stay tuned for more updates on the local sports scene as everyone looks forward to the thaw of spring!
