As the vibrant colors of fall roll into Vermont, high school sports are in full swing with many thrilling matches already taking place. This week marked the beginning of the fall season with several exciting games across various sports including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running.
In soccer, one of the standout matches was between Mount Mansfield and Champlain Valley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Delilah Locher scored for MMU, while Reese Kingsbury found the net for CVU. Both teams showed strong defensive skills, with Toni Cardinal and Hannah Zabalinski combining for 11 saves for MMU, while Anya Johnson made one key save for CVU.
The Burlington team showcased an impressive performance, defeating BFA-St. Albans with a solid score of 6-0. Ella Knudsen led the charge with two goals and three assists, helping her team dominate the game.
In other matches, Mount Abraham edged out Rice with a score of 2-0, while Essex took a thrilling win against Colchester with a 2-1 finish, marking a significant moment as Essex claimed victory over last year’s D-I champions. Richford also had a nail-biter, managing to beat Winooski 3-2 thanks to a crucial goal from Kyrielle Deuso with just 12 minutes left in the match.
In field hockey, Fair Haven triumphed over Otter Valley with a score of 4-2. Maddy Perry and Leigha Kretzer both contributed significantly, each scoring twice for Fair Haven.
