Exciting New Opportunity for Psychology Students in Columbia

Columbia, SC – On a sunny September day, the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation at Midlands Technical College (MTC), where an important agreement was signed on September 24th. This agreement aims to help students aspiring to pursue a career in psychology by making it easier for them to transition from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree.

A New Pathway to Success

Officials from MTC and Presbyterian College (PC) gathered together to sign an agreement that opens doors for qualified MTC graduates interested in transferring to PC’s psychology program. Students who earn an associate’s degree with a focus on applied psychology, biological psychology, or forensic psychology will have the chance to step into PC’s Bachelor of Science in Psychology program—all within just two years!

This exciting pathway means MTC students can seamlessly transition to a four-year degree and set themselves on a path for rewarding careers in psychology. According to the Princeton Review, psychology is one of the seven most popular college majors in the U.S., reflecting a growing interest in understanding the human mind and behavior.

Scholarships to Lend a Hand

In addition to an easy transition process, this partnership includes financial advantages for students. Qualified transfer students will be eligible for scholarships worth at least $10,000 per year. And for those who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, there’s even a chance to snag an additional $2,000 scholarship.

This is an exciting opportunity for both schools to help our respective students achieve their life goals and career aspirations in psychology,” said Dr. Anita Gustafson, president of PC. She emphasized the potential of MTC graduates to thrive at PC and contribute positively to both institutions’ legacies.

A Welcoming Environment

Dr. Erin McAdams, PC’s interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, expressed her enthusiasm as well, noting, “Psychology remains a popular choice of major nationally and here at PC. I am confident that Midlands Tech graduates will enjoy their interactions with our gifted psychology professors both in and out of the classroom.”

Students can expect not just academic rigor, but also a rich experience with opportunities to engage in research, partake in internships, and apply theoretical concepts in real-world settings. It’s a comprehensive approach designed to prepare students for careers in fields like therapy, counseling, law enforcement, and education, where psychology plays a vital role.

Connecting Goals and Dreams

Dr. Gregory Little, president of MTC, echoed these sentiments, stating that the agreement aligns perfectly with the college’s workforce development mission. “This is about opening doors for people interested in careers such as therapy and counseling, teaching, child development, law, and criminal justice,” he explained.

Completing two years at MTC before transferring not only allows for a smooth transition into a four-year program, but it can also save families thousands of dollars. Dr. Little pointed out that students can achieve high-quality education without breaking the bank, making this agreement all the more appealing.

Looking Toward the Future

The buzz at the college signifies much more than just a ceremony; it signals new beginnings for many. Students in Columbia—and beyond—now have an exciting opportunity to step into their future with confidence. As the skies outside gradually moved from morning showers to clearer horizons, so too do students find their pathways unfolding brightly in front of them.

In conclusion, this agreement is set to make a real difference not just for students at Midlands Technical College, but for the entire community. By investing in education and the growth of future teachers, counselors, and psychologists, the promise of a bright future is not only a dream but an achievable goal.
