Exciting Times for High School Football in Zachary: Celebrating Legacy and Facing Challenges as the Season Heats Up

In Zachary, Louisiana, high school football excitement is in the air as the playoffs approach. This past Friday, December 1, 2023, the atmosphere was electric as confetti fell over the Dutchtown student section during the kickoff of the Division I non-select semifinal game. But with the thrill of the game comes a mix of emotions, especially as we reflect on the unexpected passing of beloved coach Charles “Coach Bags” Baglio.

As we dive into Week 8 of high school football, several highly anticipated matchups lie ahead. On Friday night, fans can look forward to the intense face-off between Kentwood and Southern Lab. Next week, Madison Prep will clash with University, while Episcopal takes on Dunham. In Week 10, the spotlight will be on the heated rivalry between Zachary and Catholic.

Coach Baglio’s legacy is felt throughout the community. Known for his positivity and willingness to help others, he made a lasting impact on many players and coaches during his time at Independence. He was a passionate advocate for young athletes and worked tirelessly to support his teams, even reaching out to discuss all-state selections with local media. Eric Held, LHSCA director, praised Baglio for being a pioneer in professional development for coaches, establishing the Louisiana Football Coaches Association and encouraging new coaches.

While big schools can enjoy the benefits of large rosters and community support, not all teams are as fortunate. For instance, Plain Dealing has faced challenges this season with just 16 players on their roster, stirring discussions about creating an eight-man football option if needed. Injuries have also affected their season, resulting in a recent forfeit to Jonesboro-Hodge.

Amid all this, there’s a growing excitement for girls flag football, a sport gaining traction across the nation, supported by the NFL. Lakeshore coach Brent Indest recently shared thoughts on societal changes and how milestone celebrations in education have expanded, reflecting broader shifts in expectations and involvement in youth sports.

These themes of change and development in sports and life underscore the exciting and sometimes overwhelming landscape of high school football today. As we prepare for thrilling games ahead, it’s important to remember the lessons learned and the community spirit that unites us through the sport.
