High School Sports Update: Vermont Fall Season Kicks Off

The 2024 fall sports season is officially underway in Vermont, and teams are already making their mark on the field. Soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running are all in action, providing excitement for fans and athletes alike.

In soccer, notable games featured Merrimack edging out Vermont with a close score of 3-2. Rachel Bjorgan, Madison Cardaci, and Maria Lindberg each scored for Merrimack, with Margaux Favre making 12 saves. For Vermont, Evelyne Blais-Savoie and Alaina Tanski both netted a goal each while Ellie Simmons recorded a noteworthy 16 saves. Lindberg’s late-game power play was the decisive moment, bringing home the victory for Merrimack.

Meanwhile, in another match, St. Thomas overcame Vermont with a score of 3-1. Goals from Matthew Gleason, Mason Poolman, and Cooper Gay pushed St. Thomas ahead. Aaron Trotter was impressive in goal with 27 saves, while Vermont’s Max Strand scored their lone goal and Keenan Rancier had 37 saves in a strong defensive display.

In other local matchups, Leland & Gray defeated Randolph 3-2, and Vergennes took down Milton 2-1, with Ethan Croke highlighting for Vergennes with 2 goals. Croke’s second goal in the 69th minute was crucial in securing the win.

Additionally, Green Mountain achieved a solid 3-1 victory over White River Valley, while Otter Valley won against Woodstock with a score of 2-1, showcasing Marissa Dick’s key goal that broke the tie.

Looking ahead, Vermont is set to face UMass Lowell at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a game against NJIT also scheduled for 1 p.m.. Keep an eye out for the latest scores and updates, as coaches and team representatives are encouraged to report results promptly to keep everyone informed.
