Memorial Service Held for Fallen K-9 Officer in Prosperity, S.C.

PROSPERITY, S.C. — In a heartfelt tribute to a fallen hero, a memorial service was held on June 19 for K-9 Officer Coba, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in Newberry County. Coba, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, was a dedicated member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), serving on the SWAT Team and K9 Tracking Team since joining the force in 2021.

Details of the Incident

The events that led to this sorrowful day began when deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Gravel Road to serve a fugitive felony warrant. When deputies arrived, they discovered the suspect hiding inside a family member’s home. As K-9 Officer Coba bravely confronted the armed suspect, the situation escalated quickly. The suspect opened fire, striking Coba. In the ensuing chaos, law enforcement officers returned fire at the suspect.

Coba was immediately rushed to an emergency veterinarian for treatment, but sadly succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was taken to an area trauma center and several deputies were treated for minor injuries, primarily cuts.

A Service of Remembrance

In response to the heartfelt loss, Governor Henry McMaster reflected on the impact and bravery of K-9s and their handlers. He took to social media, expressing gratitude for the dedication shown by K-9 officers and their human partners: “Today, we tragically lost SLED K9 Agent Coba in the line of duty during the apprehension of an armed subject in Newberry County. We are grateful for our K9s, their handlers, and all our law enforcement officers who put their lives at risk each and every day,” he wrote. This somber message resonated with many in the community who relied on K-9s like Coba for safety and protection.

Coba’s Legacy

K-9 Coba was not only a protector but also a beloved partner to officers within SLED. Throughout his service, Coba participated in numerous training exercises and apprehensions, contributing to public safety across the region. His presence on the team helped foster trust within the communities he served, and he will be remembered fondly as a loyal and brave officer.

Investigation Updates

As of now, there are no updates regarding the suspect’s condition following the incident. In line with standard protocol, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office has been assigned to carry out an investigation into the shooting, ensuring a thorough review of the events that unfolded.

Looking Ahead

The memorial service for K-9 Coba was a poignant occasion, bringing together law enforcement officials and community members to honor his spirit and service. The ceremony took place at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy located in Columbia, beginning at 10 a.m., allowing those who knew and loved Coba to pay their respects.

The loss of K-9 Officer Coba is a significant reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers, both human and animal alike. As the community mourns together, the dedication shown by officers like Coba will not be forgotten. His bravery and commitment to keeping the public safe serves as an enduring example for all officers serving in the line of duty today.

As more details emerge from the ongoing investigation, the community remains hopeful for justice, while also expressing deep appreciation for the service provided by their dedicated law enforcement agencies. For now, they reflect on the life of a true hero, surrounded by those grateful for his sacrifices.
