With the 2025 football season on the horizon, Florida A&M is invigorating its coaching staff under head coach James Colzie III. Key hires include Cedric Williams as co-offensive coordinator and Kevin Maurice as running backs coach, both bringing championship experience from North Carolina Central. The team aims to improve its offensive power and player discipline after a promising 7-5 record last year. As new talents join the roster, Rattlers fans are eager to see the impact these changes will make on the field.
The sunshine state is buzzing with anticipation as the Florida A&M Rattlers gear up for the 2025 football season! With James Colzie III entering his second year as head coach, there’s a fresh wave of energy sweeping through the team. He’s made some significant coaching hires that fans are eager to see unfold as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
One of the biggest moves comes with the hiring of Cedric Williams, who steps in as the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Williams isn’t just any addition; he has a rich background that includes a significant role at North Carolina Central, where he helped lead the Eagles to their impressive 2022 Black College Football National title. Williams takes over from the well-respected former offensive coordinator Joseph Henry, bringing with him a wealth of experience that is sure to benefit the Rattlers.
Another exciting appointment is Kevin Maurice as the new running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Maurice also hails from North Carolina Central and shares a championship-winning experience. He takes the baton from former coach Marcus Windham as he looks to develop fresh talent in the Rattlers’ backfield.
Cedric Williams isn’t a stranger to the sideline. A former four-year starting offensive lineman for the South Carolina Gamecocks, he kicked off his coaching career as a graduate assistant back in 2006. His coaching journey has taken him to various institutions, including Tennessee State and Georgia State, in addition to prestigious NFL teams as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship program.
Let’s not forget about Kevin Maurice. His journey on the gridiron started as an All-American running back before he transitioned into coaching back in 2008. With stints at Midwestern State, Nevada, Purdue, and even Miami, Maurice carries a rich portfolio that should serve him well in Tallahassee.
Last season, Florida A&M finished with a respectable 7-5 record under Colzie’s leadership, and this year, he plans to build on that. After analyzing their performance, it’s clear that the Rattlers need to focus on bolstering their offensive power, especially in their rushing game, where they found themselves at the bottom of the rankings in the SWAC. The team managed only 1,740 rushing yards and a mere eight rushing touchdowns throughout the entire season. With Williams at the helm of the offensive line, fans are hopeful for a turnaround.
While the offense is under the spotlight, the Rattlers’ defense isn’t left out either. The team aims to slightly tweak their strategy, especially focusing on run defense, given their previous season performance where they were seventh in the SWAC defensively.
Colzie is also on the mission to bring new players into the squad. The upcoming season should see between 10-15 scholarship players and around 10-15 preferred walk-ons joining the Rattlers. Exciting commitments are already rolling in, including quarterback Tyler Jefferson from Central Michigan and defensive lineman Xavier Perkins from Florida State. It’s a thrilling time for Rattlers fans!
One of the key focuses for Coach Colzie is improving team discipline. Florida A&M found themselves among the most penalized teams in the FCS last season, amassing an astonishing 93 penalties for 876 yards. Colzie recognizes the need for better discipline on the field, particularly in reducing turnovers and penalties, areas that can significantly impact game outcomes.
As January 6, 2025, approaches, fans can look forward to seeing how the coaching staff shapes up. With promising new additions and a renewed focus, the Florida A&M Rattlers are poised to make a splash in the upcoming season. Buckle up, fans; it’s going to be an exciting ride!
