Snow and Ice Expected in Greenville This Weekend
As winter tightens its grip on the Upstate, residents of Greenville, South Carolina should prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions coming this Friday. Are you ready for some snow? Well, it’s looking highly likely that many of you will wake up to a winter wonderland!
What to Expect on Friday
The fun begins early Friday morning as snow showers will start making their way into the western mountains and northeast Georgia after 9 AM. By noon, folks across the entire Western Carolinas can expect the snow to become widespread, blanketing our area in a cozy layer of white. Snowfall is expected to continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening, really giving us that winter vibe we often dream about.
However, as night falls, there’s a bit of a twist. After 6 PM, some areas in the southern Upstate, including Abbeville, Greenwood, Newberry, and parts of northeast Georgia, may see a shift from snow to sleet and even freezing rain. This is due to warm air trying to sneak in from the south. So, our beautiful snow might get a slippery top layer of ice!

While the thought of a snowy landscape is exciting, it’s important to remember that this combination can create tricky road conditions. Imagine a layer of snow underneath, followed by ice — it’s definitely not an ideal situation for travel. Bridges and elevated surfaces will freeze up first, becoming particularly slick. Even though ice totals are estimated to be on the lower end, we might still see enough to make driving conditions treacherous.
Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by staying off the roads if you can. If you must venture out, always be cautious on those roadways that might have sleet and freezing rain. What About Saturday?
By the time we all wake up Saturday morning, the snow and freezing rain should be winding down. Expect clearing by around 2 AM, but for the early risers, those roads will likely still be covered in snow and ice for several hours. It may take a bit of time, but we can all breathe a sigh of relief when temperatures finally rise above freezing between 10 AM and 11 AM.
And here’s a little bright spot — Saturday afternoon is set to bring some sunshine! Ah, how we crave that warmth after the bitter cold. The sunshine will help melt away the snow, clearing up just in time for a relaxing weekend. So, don’t forget to step outside and enjoy the fresh air, but remember to still dress warmly as chilly temperatures linger.
Snow Accumulation and Forecast
Snowfall totals for the northern and central parts of the Upstate are projected to reach about 1-3 inches, with the possibility of some ice coming into play. Meanwhile, those towards the southern Upstate can expect around a trace to 2 inches of the white stuff, plus potentially up to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation to add to the fun.
If you’re in western North Carolina, be extra alert as a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for sections of the area. Snow totals could be between 3-6 inches Friday into Saturday, making for a magical winter scene.
