High School Football: Madera Coyotes and Kerman Lions Gear Up for Historic Championship Clash

Excitement Builds as Madera and Kerman Gear Up for Championship Showdown

Fresno, Calif. – On this Thanksgiving morning, the anticipation is palpable as the Madera Coyotes prepare for their upcoming game in the DIII championship. This will be Madera’s first trip to the finals since 2014, and the players are eager to make their mark. The Coyotes have faced challenges in the past, having reached six section finals without a win, holding a record of 0-5 in championship games.

Head coach Kenny Paolinelli, who has been part of the Madera program for years, expressed the significance of this moment. “It means a lot. This is something I always dreamed of as a high school player. We’ve always talked about trying to win a Valley title here,” he said. The team went through a final practice amidst the morning fog, surveying the field and preparing mentally for the battle ahead.

Leading the charge for the Coyotes is quarterback Joel Arellano, recently named Player of the Week by a regional sports outlet. Following a stunning performance in a victory over Kennedy of Delano, where he scored eight touchdowns and racked up 606 total offensive yards, Arellano is ready for the challenge. “Honestly, it’s surreal. I’ve never been in this position before,” he shared, acknowledging the excitement of the moment.

Meanwhile, seventeen miles south, the Kerman Lions are aiming to break their own championship drought. Last year, coach Damon Jenkins led his team to the finals for the first time, though they fell short against Mission Oak. This year, the Lions are back, overcoming the number one seed, Porterville, to secure their spot in the final once again.

Coach Jenkins, who won three national titles as a player, emphasizes the importance of the “little things” that have made Kerman a more cohesive unit. “They understand what I’m about. They understand that when I talk to them, it’s coming from a place of love,” he said. The connection between the players and their coach appears stronger than ever, which bodes well for their chances.

As the championship day approaches, both teams are looking to secure their first titles. Madera, with an explosive offense boasting an 8-4 record, will face off against Kerman, known for its strong defense and impressive 11-2 record. This matchup promises to be thrilling, with something on the line for both programs.

With everything to play for and a championship on the line, fans and players alike are counting down the hours to what will surely be an unforgettable game.
