High School Sports Recap: Fall Season Kicks Off in Vermont

This week marked the beginning of the 2024 Vermont high school fall sports season. Numerous matches were held, showcasing the talents of local teams across various sports such as soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and cross-country running. Here’s a look at some of the standout performances from the week.

Soccer Highlights

In a thrilling match, Mount Mansfield edged out Burlington in a double overtime game, winning 5-4. Chloe DeJong played a pivotal role for Mount Mansfield, scoring twice, including the game-winner. On the other side, Ella Knudsen put up an impressive performance for Burlington, netting four goals.

Essex also had a strong showing, defeating South Burlington 1-0, thanks to Sophia Liu‘s lone goal. Kelsie Scanlon made five saves to secure the clean sheet.

Field Hockey Results

In field hockey action, Middlebury secured a 2-0 victory against Rice, with Jazmyn Hurley scoring one goal and assisting another. Iris Rankin stood out in Lamoille’s 5-1 win over Lyndon, netting two goals, while Maisie Thompson and others contributed to the victory.

Volleyball Matches

Volleyball provided its own share of excitement, as Essex defeated Champlain Valley in a close match, 3-1. Riley Austin led the charge with an impressive all-around performance, tallying nine kills and twelve digs. Lyndon also showcased skill with a 3-1 win over Randolph, powered by Noa Martinez‘s seven aces.

Upcoming Games

Fans can look forward to more action as teams prepare for upcoming matches. Notable games on the schedule include BFA-Fairfax at Caledonia United and Essex visiting Burlington. Be sure to catch the games scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and some later at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m..

As the fall season unfolds, coaches and team representatives are asked to report game results to keep everyone informed. Expect more exciting updates as the season progresses!
