High School Sports Thrills: Newington and Stonington Shine in Soccer Matches

The excitement of high school sports was alive and well this past Friday, with several teams showcasing their skills on the field and court across Connecticut.

Starting with soccer, Xavier comfortably defeated Stamford with a score of 3-0. The goals came from Dylan Rivera-Bonet, Diego Canellas, and Hayden Modica, with assists from Jordan Harley, Evan Stone, and Seamus McCormack. Notably, goalie Randy Heidorn made one save, while Stamford’s Marc Zampino recorded six saves in the match.

In another soccer clash, Newington triumphed over Platt Tech with a decisive 4-0 victory. Anthony Napoletano and Bernardo Garcia each scored, alongside CJ Rosado. Rosado and Jason Somera also contributed assists. Newington’s Gavin Williams had a solid performance with three saves, supported by Stephano Logrono who made one save, while Emilio Contreras from Platt Tech faced a whopping eleven shots.

Moving on to the thrilling match between Stonington and Seymour, the two teams battled hard, with Stonington edging out Seymour 4-3. Salvatore Alessio was a standout with three goals for Stonington, while Joey Carrafiello tallied a goal for Seymour. The game also saw some impressive saves from both goalies; Stonington’s Nick Canella had five saves and Seymour’s Alex Porczynski made eight saves.

In volleyball, Trumbull took care of Hamden in straight sets, winning 3-0 with scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-16. Paulina Bykowski led the charge with nine kills, followed closely by Bailey Wright who racked up 21 assists and eight aces. The team displayed excellent teamwork and skill, making for an impressive match.

NFA also found success against Westhill, winning 3-1 in a hard-fought match. Notable performances included Savannah Guernsey, who had 22 assists alongside eight kills, while Evelina Klyukin contributed significantly with eight kills and ten digs.

As the weekend unfolds, sports fans can look forward to more thrilling action as these dedicated young athletes continue to compete and showcase their talents on the field and court.
