This past week in Queensbury, student-athletes showcased their talent across numerous sports. In the Section II girls’ golf championships held at Hiland Park on October 16, 2024, Colonie senior Sienna Wheeler made an impressive appearance, watching her tee shot on the 18th hole and finishing with a strong score of 78. She is currently tied for third place, setting the stage for an exciting final round on Friday.
On the football field, excitement filled the air as several players delivered standout performances. Dominic DiBacco from Shaker scored three touchdowns on his three carries, running for 35, 2, and 50 yards, despite the team’s 27-19 loss against Christian Brothers Academy. Meanwhile, Jacob Phelps from Averill Park was a key player in his team’s 47-12 victory over La Salle, rushing for 166 yards and scoring one touchdown while also catching two passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
In another thrilling matchup, Zavry Ward of Queensbury connected on 12 out of 24 passes for a stunning 364 yards and six touchdowns, contributing to a decisive 41-12 win against South Glens Falls. Over at Glens Falls, Brody Holcomb also shone brightly, completing 20 of 27 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns, leading his team to victory over Mechanicville/Hoosic Valley with a score of 27-8.
On the soccer field, Brandon DaCosta from Ichabod Crane made headlines with an impressive five-goal game against Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, helping his team to an astounding 11-0 win. In separate matches, Lillian Willis of South Glens Falls scored three goals in victories against Glens Falls and Johnstown.
In cross country, William Smitas, a senior from Guilderland, took first place at the Albany County Meet with a time of 13:09.9, showcasing his speed and endurance.
As the competitions continue, fans and players alike are looking forward to more engaging contests in the coming week. Each performance reinforces the dedication of our student-athletes, making this season vibrant and exciting.
