Bronx, New York, is in mourning following the death of Master Sergeant (U.S. Air Force Retired) Harmon Richard Glymph, Jr., affectionately known as “Hock.” He passed away on November 20, 2024, leaving a legacy of service, humor, and warmth that touched many lives in his community.
Who Was Harmon Richard Glymph, Jr.?
Harmon was born on January 25, 1945, to the late Beaute L. Sanders Glymph and the late Harmon Glymph, Sr. He grew up in Newberry, South Carolina, and graduated from Gallman High School in 1963. As a student, Harmon drove the school bus during a challenging period of segregation, showing early signs of leadership and commitment to his community.
Military Service and Later Life
After high school, Harmon enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving bravely in Vietnam. His service earned him the rank of Master Sergeant, and he later transitioned to the Air National Guard after retiring from his active-duty role. He moved to New York City, where he met and married Margaret Gresham in 1978, building a life together filled with love and laughter.
Even after retiring from the military, Harmon continued to contribute to the community by working as an electrician at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. He was well-known for his charming personality, infectious humor, and love for dancing, which brought joy to those around him.
A Lasting Legacy
Harmon is remembered fondly by friends and family as “Hock”, “Uncle,” and “Sarge.” His *passionate support for the military* and the willingness to help others never went unnoticed. He is predeceased by his wife Margaret, along with his sister, Amye Harney, and brothers James Young and John Johnson, Sr.
His family includes his sister, Beverly Glymph Miller (Michael), of Charlotte, N.C., his special nephew, John ‘Speedy’ Johnson, Jr., and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, who all cherished him deeply. Loyalty to family and friends was one of his defining traits, and he made sure everyone felt appreciated and loved.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel. The community is invited to come together to celebrate Harmon’s life and to support the family during this difficult time. Family members have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences received.
