Community Comes Together in Columbia to Support Hurricane Helene Recovery

The residents of Columbia, S.C., are rallying together as the community works to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Helene. The storm has left many in the Midlands dealing with power outages, damaged homes, and disrupted daily routines. Thankfully, several local spots are stepping up to offer assistance, especially when it comes to food and resources.

SNAP Benefits Replacement Assistance

The South Carolina Legal Justice Center has announced that those who lost their SNAP benefits due to power outages lasting four hours or more, utility shut-offs, or storm-related damage may qualify for a replacement. The Department of Social Services is set to offer replacement benefits for up to one month, so anyone in need should take the time to fill out and submit the appropriate form.

Food Distribution Efforts

Residents can pick up food and water from several locations across town to help them get through the weekend. At Wiz’s Eatery, there will be a massive giveaway of 24,000 bottles of water and 2,000 lbs. of ice starting at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is conveniently located at 110 Church Street.

Support for First Responders

The local YMCA has opened its doors to offer complimentary showers to linemen who are tirelessly working to restore power to the area. It’s a small token of appreciation for these heroes who are facing challenging conditions to help the community.

Free Meals Around Town

If you’re looking for a meal, mark your calendars for Hawg Heaven, which will be offering free food from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, or until supplies last. This venue is known for its delicious offerings and reliable service, so it’s bound to be a warm and welcoming place for those in need.

Additionally, a food truck will be stationed at the Fire House Conference Center, where you can not only grab a bite but also charge your devices while you’re there. Food trucks are also set up in strategic spots around town, specifically in the parking lot of Tractor Supply.

Community Initiative by Local Organizations

The NAACP and local celebrity, Jeffrey Lampkin, are joining forces to provide free meals at the Big Lots parking lot in Newberry, kicking off at 1 p.m.. The meals are free while supplies last, aiming to help families hit hard by the storm.

Meanwhile, the Universal Outreach Church of God in Christ will be serving meals at their location on 220 North Royal Tower Drive starting at 2 p.m. Sunday. They are opening their doors to families, ready to serve those in need of a warm meal.

More Opportunities for Free Food

If you’re in Irmo, swing by JC’s Outdoor Equipment on 126 Shore Road, where they’re providing free food and showers. They’re also willing to cook food if you bring your own ingredients along!

Additionally, all three locations of Salsarita’s in West Columbia, Lexington, and Killian will be open Sunday until 9 p.m., offering a free meal to local first responders who show their badges.

School Meal Distribution for Kids

And here’s fantastic news for parents! The Lexington-Richland School District Five is providing bag lunches for students on Monday at Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, and Chapin High School bus loops. Just remember to bring a form of ID and your children’s names to receive the lunches between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.. Any kids aged 18 and under can get a free meal, making it easier for families to navigate this tough time.
