Columbia, S.C. – In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the community in the Midlands is coming together, offering food and essential resources to help residents as they start to rebuild their lives. The storm has left quite an impact; however, people are stepping up where they’re needed most to ensure no neighbor goes without.
If you or someone you know is struggling to find food, you’re in luck! There are several places throughout the area that are ready to help. For those receiving SNAP benefits, the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) is working hard to provide additional support. They have requested a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would allow them to automatically supply replacement benefits for households that have experienced a power outage lasting more than four hours. If the waiver is approved, assistance will be based on each household’s monthly issuance date.
It’s crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest information directly from reliable sources. The DSS emphasizes that residents should consult verified outlets and not rely on the rumors often spread through social media. In case you need to make a quick call for assistance, you can reach out to the DSS or check their official communications for the most accurate updates. Always prioritize reliable channels for your information!
The community’s support continues via emergency shelters and feeding sites that are operational in various locations. If you find yourself in immediate need and can’t access food, don’t hesitate to reach your local food bank. They’re there for you during these tough times! For additional resources regarding emergency shelters and feeding locations, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) has all the crucial details. They can also be reached at 1-866-246-0133 if you need help finding an available shelter.
Generosity is in the air! JC’s Outdoor Equipment store located on 126 Shore Road in Gilbert is stepping up to offer free food and showers. They have made it even more appealing by providing cooking facilities for community members who want to prepare their food on-site. Meanwhile, Swansea First Baptist Church is open and ready to welcome those affected by the storm. They are offering free showers and meals, with shower units open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and meals served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
But that’s not all! The church is also allowing people to refill water containers and even charge their devices. It’s moments like these that really highlight the spirit of our community.
The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has been active in sharing resources for residents affected by the hurricane. They have taken to social media, spreading the word to ensure everyone is aware of the available assistance. Staying connected as a community will go a long way in helping everyone bounce back from this storm.
Through collaboration and a helping hand, Columbia is proving that it’s not just a city, but a community that cares deeply for everyone within it. As residents pick up the pieces, it’s heartwarming to witness the outpour of support and common humanity. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these resources or to reach out if you know someone who might need assistance. Together, we will rebuild, and together, we will thrive.
