CHAPIN, S.C. – A heartbreaking accident on Interstate 26 early Thursday morning has claimed the lives of a mother and her young son. Authorities say the crash involved multiple vehicles and caused significant traffic delays in the area.
The crash occurred around 2:45 a.m. near Columbia Avenue and Peak Street while 47-year-old LaRhonda Davis Gibson was driving her sedan with her 23-month-old son, Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr.. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), Gibson’s car was hit from behind by a pickup truck while she was slowing down for oncoming traffic.
The impact from the pickup truck sent Gibson’s vehicle crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer that was also in the area. Sadly, both LaRhonda and Ketron were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Emergency responders transported two individuals from the pickup truck to a local hospital with injuries. The severity of those injuries has not been disclosed. The accident caused a significant backup on the interstate, leading to congestion near Bush River Road and Leaphart Road as vehicles struggled to navigate the scene.
Currently, the SCHP and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this moment, no charges have been announced against anyone involved in the accident.
The story of LaRhonda and Ketron hits close to home, highlighting the impact of such accidents on families and communities. Road safety awareness is needed now more than ever to prevent similar tragedies.
As the investigation continues, officials urge motorists to drive attentively and remain aware of their surroundings to enhance road safety. Updates regarding the incident will be accessible as they become available.
For anyone who was in the area or witnessed the accident, authorities have encouraged them to come forward with any information that may aid in the ongoing investigation.
