Newberry County, S.C. has been shaken by an unfortunate incident this week that has left many in the community mourning. Early Tuesday morning, a beloved K-9 officer, K-9 Coba, who worked with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, was killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a suspect.

An Attempted Arrest Turns Fatal

According to reports from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were executing a fugitive felony warrant on Gravel Road in the Prosperity area. Authorities had reason to believe the suspect was hiding inside the home of a family member. As the officers approached, the suspect began to emerge from the house. That’s when K-9 Coba sprang into action.

Coba, a brave and skilled canine officer, quickly located the suspect inside the home. Unfortunately, before officers could apprehend him, the situation escalated dramatically. The suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking K-9 Coba. The officers quickly responded and engaged in a shootout, injuring the suspect in the process.

A Devastating Outcome

Despite the quick efforts of the officers to save him, K-9 Coba was taken to an emergency veterinarian following the shooting. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries. The news of Coba’s passing has hit close to home for many. Not only was he a dedicated member of the SLED K-9 Tracking Team and the SWAT Team, but he was also a cherished companion and partner to many in law enforcement.

In addition to the loss of Coba, a few deputies suffered minor cuts during the chaotic incident and were treated for their injuries. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was also taken to a hospital; it’s unclear what his condition is at this time.

Community Mourning and Support

Residents, law enforcement officers, and fellow canine handlers have come together to honor K-9 Coba’s memory and his commitment to keeping communities safe. Many are sharing their condolences on social media and reminiscing about the wonderful work he accomplished in his career.

In a fitting tribute, K-9 Coba had been serving with SLED since 2021, where he was known not just for his impressive skills but also for his friendly demeanor. He served on the K-9 Tracking Team and the SLED SWAT Team, handling numerous situations with courage and determination. Coba played a vital role in many operations and has left a mark on the hearts of those who worked alongside him.

Investigation to Follow

The incident has prompted an investigation to ensure transparency and accountability. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Office has been called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting. It’s crucial that a thorough examination of the events lead to findings that will help the community understand what transpired during that tragic day.

A Call to Remember
