Memorial Service Held for K-9 Officer Shot by Suspect in Newberry County

PROSPERITY, S.C. – An Officer’s Ultimate Sacrifice

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed the death of K-9 Officer Coba, tragically shot by a suspect during a felony warrant service in Newberry County. Officer Coba, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, was shot when the suspect opened fire as officers arrived to serve the warrant.

An Unexpected Tragedy

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a call at a family home on Gravel Road, in the Prosperity area of the county. They were there to serve a fugitive felony warrant. According to officials, the suspect was discovered hiding inside the residence and opened fire on K-9 Officer Coba when confronted.

Remembering Officer Coba

Originally joining SLED in 2021, Officer Coba was part of both the SLED SWAT Team and K-9 Tracking Team. Despite his relatively short time on the force, Coba participated in numerous deployments, his service keeping the community, law enforcement partners, and his SWAT Team safe.

Aftermath of the Shooting

After being shot, Officer Coba was immediately rushed to an emergency veterinarian for treatment. Unluckily, he later succumbed to the injuries. The suspect was also injured in a return fire and was transported to an area trauma center for medical attention. There are no current updates regarding the suspect’s condition. Simultaneously, several deputies at the scene were treated for minor injuries.

A Governor’s Tribute

Upon hearing the news of Officer Coba’s death, Governor Henry McMaster expressed his sorrow on the social media platform. He lauded the bravery of K-9 officers and their handlers, acknowledging the risks they face every day in the line of duty.

Justice Will be Served

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Office has been mandated to undertake a thorough investigation into the incident as per the established procedure. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Celebrating the Life and Service of K-9 Officer Coba

SLED plans to celebrate Officer Coba’s life and honor his service during a memorial service scheduled for June 19 at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy located at 5400 Broad River Road in Columbia.
