The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reported that Coba, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, was shot while assisting in the apprehension of a suspect in Prosperity, South Carolina.

Governor Henry McMaster took to social media to express his condolences, stating, “Today, we tragically lost SLED K9 Agent Coba in the line of duty…” His tribute highlights not only the loss felt by law enforcement but the broader community as well.

A memorial service for K-9 Officer Coba is scheduled for June 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy located at 5400 Broad River Road, Columbia. This event will serve as an opportunity for the public to pay their respects and honor Coba’s service and sacrifice.

While Coba’s passing has left a significant void, the heroism exhibited by the K-9 officer will not be forgotten. SLED and local law enforcement officials are collaborating with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
